Serpentine LFotM 5k – Hyde Park – 31/07/09

I guess it will not be that often that you will miss out on a Club Record by 1 second and not be too upset. That’s what happened today and Sir Dave Frampton’s MV45 mark of 17:32 lives to fight another day!

Five go wild in Hyde Park - LR - Stewart Bryant, Martyn Annetts, Karen Dodsworth, Chris Priestley and Statto (and all over 70% age-scores too)

After feeling a bit jaded of late and the fiasco at Milton Keynes HM last weekend, I was in need of a confidence booster and this 5k PB (5s improvement over my April time at same race) and a very close shave with the MV45 5k Club Record were just what the doctor ordered, and all the more so for being unexpected. I wasn’t feeling that great or enthusiastic in the morning and almost turned back home before I’d bought my train ticket - glad I didn’t now.

Like at the FVS 3k Relays, I set off steadily. I continued in this mode for the first 2k before starting to up the effort. The tactic seemed to work, as I spent the last 4k overtaking people and posted a good time. I also forgot to put on my HR monitor and thus purely ‘felt’ the race. That worked out OK too. Having said that, I tend to rely on HR monitoring more for races of 10k and upwards, but a useful experience nonetheless. Interestingly, my 5k PB last November also occurred when my HRM came loose after 1k and I carried it the rest of the way.

So, the my vital statistics for today were;

17:33 (PB)
81.42% age-score
12th overall (217 finishers)
2nd MV45-49
3rd MV40-49.

NSPCC Milton Keynes HM - 26/7/09

I achieved two unwanted firsts today

1. Missing a turn and doing a half-mile diversion
2. A DNF

I'd just come up a stiff little incline when I saw two groups of (clearly front-of field standard) runners coming towards me along two separate paths! Thus three groups of runners met at a point all asking each other what was the right way to go! The consensus seemed to be to go back the way I had just come (down the hill). There followed another brief pause whilst another subway-turn option appeared, but we ended up carrying straight on. Finally the correct route appeared as the main field passed below us down a steep grass bank. We all descended to re-join the race.

Disaster at 7.9 miles - click to enlarge image and magnify the fun!

I can not put into words what that interlude did to me mentally. In my head the race was over and I heard several other runners expressing similar views. The extra distance and the dithering must have added over 3 minutes to my time (and many others had goner even further before turning back). My heart was no longer in it. Admittedly, I had been struggling to maintain my target pace, but this just finished me off. There did seem to be a shortage of marshals, and many key turns were only accompanied by a small unmanned yellow arrow. Clearly at this turn, at least 20-25 runners missed the arrow (if indeed there was one). In any case, where was the ****** marshal !!!!?

The shortest way back to HQ was to follow the race course, otherwise I would have taken a shortcut to achieve my DNF. I had no intention of doing any more racing - I just wanted to get my bag and go home! I jogged the final 'proper' 5 miles very slowly and stopped several more times and walked. On one of these stops I untied my chip and threw it into a bush. In my mind, this was a DNF and a cruel joke. I did not want to get a time recorded. I walked most of the way up the final incline and deliberately missed off the final 200m loop in order to avoid crossing the finish line.

I didn't have the energy to seek out any officials to make a complaint, but I did hear some rumblings between other runners. My guess would be that many of the top 20-30 placings will be a farce. In all honesty, I don't think I would have met my own targets for this race, but if someone really wanted to know how to crush a runner's spirits, then here was object lesson!

Statto is feeling nervous, but positive…

… about his up-coming half-marathon in Milton Keynes this Sunday 26/7. Since the Bushy 10k debacle on 12/7, I’ve been taking it easy. There have been no Club training sessions in the interim and the two races I have done (9k Mob Match and FVS 3k relays) have been executed with the foot off the gas.

My top-secret body monitoring tool – (Stattometer ©) - is indicating there is a good race lurking within me, so I am now hopeful that this easy two weeks will enable me to do what I want to do on Sunday.

Mon Dieu – the Garmin FR405 is on the blink. The stop-watch aumatically starts/stops itself repeatedly in even the slightest drizzle. You can lock the bezel-control to stop the screens changing in the rain, but the start/stop function is one of the big buttons on the side and so, in theory, is impervious to the weather. I'm going to have to send it back for replacement. In the meantime, Ollie has kindly agreed to lend me his for the race – phew!

Fingers crossed for kind weather (esp the wind)

FVS 3k Relays - 21/7/09

They're off - pedestrians beware! (photo Martyn Annetts)

Another week, another race! I have a half-marathon I want to do well in this Sunday, so I decided not to put my body on the line for this 3k (sorry team-mates). Therefore, I approached the race a bit like my effort at the MWL 9k Mob Match last week – hard, but not all-out. Just to prove the point, my HR profile for the first 2k was almost identical to the first 2k of my last 5k race.

Apart from having a key half-marathon this weekend in Milton Keynes, I am now putting into practice the principles I'd already accepted in theory. It's just impossible to keep giving 100% in races. If one can't resist racing regularly (guilty) then either you need to run some conservatively or your body will eventually make you slow down (or stop). This can be difficult when your ego (yes, despite my modest demeanour - I do have a little one) wants you to maintain your perceived position in the pecking order! So, taking the conservative approach (excuse) into account, I was quite pleased with my time of 10:10 (5:27 mile-pace) - a PB and 35s improvement over my July 2008 time.

NHRR managed to pick up 5 team ‘gongs’ on the night, and the ladies did especially well. The event also incorporated the Herts County Road-race Relay Champs 1st Female Senior team - Rachel Gibbs, Tash Pitman, Melissa Winters 1st Female Senior team (Herts) - Rachel Gibbs, Tash Pitman, Melissa Winters 2nd Female Vet team - Jane Chappell, Jo Summers, Karen Dodsworth 2nd Female Vet team (Herts) - Jane Chappell, Jo Summers, Karen Dodsworth 3rd Male Vet team (Herts) - Pete Scrowther, Nickolas Malpeli, James Walsh, Adrian Sherwood, Pete Sibbett

A 3k race, which approximates to Vo2Max effort, is always a bit of a shock to the system for runners who train at intensities more suited for optimum 10k road-race performance. Consequently, my general sentiment on 3k racing is - at least it’s only once a year! Having said that, this is a fun team-event and the course affords lots of good spots to to cheer on your club-mates.

FVS 3k Relays - 21/7/09 - Preview

Hot on the heels of the end of the MWL season comes this annual, short-but-sharp lung-buster! In truth it’s quite good fun, as it’s only about 100m from the start/finish line over to the 1.8km mark to cheer on your team-mates. Start/Finish is same as finish line for FVS MWL 10k.

MWL Mob Match - Trent Park 9k - 15/7/09

Click on image to enlarge

A small, but perfectly formed group of Squirrels made it to the traditional end of Midweek League season 9k bash and awards presentation at Trent Park. A lovely (if hilly) and somewhat off-road course followed by a stupendous post-race nosh-up awaited those who were able to make it.

The race is officially scored (albeit separately) from the main 4-race series, but many runners take the opportunity to take the foot of the gas a little and enjoy the ride. That’s certainly what I did at any rate, aiming to run at half-marathon effort in preparation for the NSPCC Milton Keynes HM on 26th July. I’m pleased to report this worked out well, and over 9k, HM effort is not too stressful.

The weather was mercifully much cooler than the St Albans MWL race, if a little breezy in places. The Trent Park course is certainly undulating, and many of the steepest inclines are on the off-road sections, making things that little harder. As I was not running at full race-effort, I didn’t find this too taxing, but I’m sure a flat-out effort would have had the legs turning to jelly in quite a few places! Post race computation revealed that the Trent Park MWL 9k ranks 2nd in Statto’s road-race hill-ranking table (see table above), so it certainly is a testing course!

In the image above you can see the elevation profile plus my HR profile. Normally, my HR would be averaging around 170 for this kind of race, so here is proof that I was taking it, relatively, easy (honest I was)…

Feeling bushed at Bushy 10k - 12/7/09

Bushy 10k, courtesy of Bushfield Joggers, is a fast and flat 10k in Orton Southgate (Peterborough), only in its second year. Parking was ample and close to HQ, the latter being the local sports centre. It's a race of mixed scenic pleasures. The first 3k is mostly industrial estate roads. 3km of residential cycle-ways follow before a pleasant 2k section on a woodland/riverside track. The final 2k is back on cycle-ways.

I only decided to do this Sat pm having been feeling a bit jaded of late, not least due to the recent heat-wave. Normally around this time of year, I put the 10k to bed and leave it slumbering until the autumn. I decided I’d have one more heave at a sub 36m 10k and a shot at the MV45 Club Record. However, the 10k was indeed overdue for its summer slumbers, and running this race turned out to be a 10k bridge too far. I think that’s enough duff metaphors!

I pulled up at just after 5k (just feeling generally pooped and out of sorts). Sibbo's hamstring started complaining at about the same point and he shortly joined me in a minute's rest before persuading me to ‘jog’ the 2nd 5k rather than walk back to the start. There follows a brief summary of my efforts

* 1k at an over-ambitious pace
* 3k regretting the first km
* 1k contemplating stopping
* 1 min standing still and sulking with Sibbo
* 4k at a 'relaxed' pace (but not jogging really)
* 1k speeding up

Had I started slower (the first km was done at an ambitious 35:30 pace vs recent PB of 36:08), things may have worked out very differently, but I have to be honest and say that this was probably an ill-advised expedition. I’d had 4 months of consistently good race-results before the St Albans MWL race. I’ve now had two poor races in a row. I think the technical physiological phrase relevant here is “pushing your luck”! I’m still feeling good in training, so am optimistic that break from racing will see me back on track in the near future. The break will have to be somewhat staggered, due to a planned HM on 26/7…

PS – my official time for the record was 39:11. Not bad in the circumstances and that would have been a PB 14 months ago.

MWL Race 4 - St Albans 7M - 2/7/09

Click on tables to enlarge

The hottest day of the year and a 7-mile race do not make the best match up, but another great NHRR turn-out ensured that we ended the MWL series strongly. There’s been a fantastic team spirit evident this year.

We further consolidated our overall 3rd position, finishing a massive 14 points ahead of nearest challengers, FVS. The men finished 3rd on the night and the ladies 2nd. The Male Vet team missed 1st place in the series by a whisker from Barnet & District.

All-in-all, probably the Club’s best ever MWL performance by some way. NHRR also scooped 5 individual prizes for the 4-race series (see details below).

Personally, I think this was one MWL race too far for me, and, as one who particularly seems to suffer in hot weather, had my poorest race of the series. I actually felt quite ill at the end and had to lie down. Every time I tried to get up, my legs went and I had to sit/lie down again! Taking the series as a whole, I think I performed well, especially within the highly competitive MV40-49 age-category, where I was runner-up over the 4-race series.

Individual NHRR prize winners for the 4-race series

Rachel Gibbs – 1st Fem Open
Pete Scrowther – 2nd MV40 (9th Male Open)
Pete Sibbett – 3rd MV40 (12th Male Open)
Paula Adams – 3rd FV35 (8th Fem Open)
Stewart Bryant – 2nd MV50

Other noteable NHRR series-placings

James Atkins - 7th Male Open
Nick Beresford - 11th Male Open
Melissa Winters - 6th Fem Open
Natasha Pitman - 12th Fem Open
