Burning off a few mince pies…
After several days where I had consumed far too many mince pies, high-fat snacks, chocolate and red wine, I came into this race in a relaxed frame of mind with modest ambitions! As it turned out, it might have paid to aim a bit higher…
For most of the race I ran at a half-marathon rather than 10M effort (by heart-rate) as I wanted to enjoy a speedy work-out as opposed to another put-it-all-on-the-line ball-breaker. I was surprised therefore to find myself at the 3M mark with an average pace of 5:55/mile. The next two miles are mostly uphill before mile 7 takes you back down. For the second race in a row, the Garmin was reading an average mile-pace about 2s/mile slower than I was actually achieving. The result of this was twofold; 1. I relaxed, thinking that a PB (sub 6:02/mile pace) was not going to happen given the last 2 miles of the race are quite tough and 2. ended up missing a PB by 3s!
Despite this apparent failure, I was quite pleased. This is a hilly course and I came in to it on the back of several days of Xmas binge-eating/drinking, plus I ran a conservative race. Also, I’ve not done any speedwork for several weeks.
Therefore, all things considered, I think this sets me up quite nicely for some good performances in 2010.

One mince pie too many...has Statto let himself go?
Pre-Buntingford photo-shock special
Statto spots a mince pie to his right and contemplates yet another a carb-stop.
Statto wishes all his dedicated readers (yes, there are at least 2 now) a belated merry Xmas and a very happy 2010.
PS - a special hello to a the father of one of our celebrated female Squirrels (and it seems a secret fan of this blog). Thanks for enjoying my self-indulgences!

Andy Reading 10k (Bicester) – 13/12/09
Nearly, but not quite…
After Thursday’s 5k exploits, I thought I had a sporting chance of beating my 36:08 10k PB and even perhaps a sniff at Sir Darth’s MV45 CR of 35:53. I failed on both counts!
This is a fairly flat course, but there are two long (1.4km and 2km) stretches that are gradually climbing (albeit not too steeply). The first of these sections seemed to pass without problem, but the second one did not. I passed 5k in 17:50 (5:45 mile-pace) and kept this pace right up to the 6k mark. Then – I turned into the 2nd 2k section mention above - and - the wind!
This second 2k 'climb' is part of a 3k section on an exposed airfield perimiter road. My mile-pace tumbled, with an average mile-pace between 6 and 8km of 6:04. I managed to get back on target 5:45 pace for the last 2k, but the damage was done and the sub 36m 10k will have to wait – again! My time of 36:12 (17th, 3rd MV45) was only 4s short of my PB and, given the wind and my recent 5k exertions, perhaps a pretty good effort.

A good night’s work… and a confidence booster
So after several weeks of feeling tired and wondering were my MOJO had gone, the reduced mileage and speedwork, plus several nights of good sleep finally paid off.
I should add an important note about the MOJO-situation. A look back at the week preceding the low-point of the Wing XC was quite instructive. The previous Sunday I had run a HM PB and needed a break from racing. My wife had an operation on the Monday and I slept (poorly) on the settee the rest of the week as we had the M-in-law staying to help out post-op and there were not enough beds to go around. I'd also had a really bad week at work. Statto's tip - avoid this race preparation model!
I was unusually anxious jogging down to the start because I didn’t really know what to expect of my body. At least the weather conditions were unusually good compared with the virtually permanent windy conditions we’ve had for about 6 weeks. Even more than hills, wind really is (if you’ll excuse the unfortunate metaphor) a pain in the backside!
I set off cautiously for the first km before starting to pick things up. I was still feeling quite strong at the 3.5km mark where the long up-hill section to the finish starts (thanks Tash and Ollie for the encouragement at that point) Then, there was what (initially at least) seemed like a most unwanted distraction – I could sense the Sibbo gaining on me! I was feeling good going up the hill, so tried to concentrate on my own race. Not long after 4k, my MV45 mentor/nemesis was right behind me and forcing the pace. The last 200m were a full-on battle for MV45 pride and I’m pleased to say that, on this occasion at least, I had just enough to pip him to the line.
I had no idea until I crossed the line that I had run such a good time (the Garmin was showing at 5:36 mile-pace, when in fact I’d done 5:34) This meant a time of 17:18 - a new PB by 15s and also a new MV45 Club Record. This beat Sibbo’s mark of 17:23, set just 2-weeks earlier. In fact, Sibbo beat his ‘old’ MV45 CR too with 17:20. I’m sure that having Sibbo all over me helped me dig out an extra few secs in that last km!
Sibbo and I have a lot of mutual respect. Our 'rivalry' is also based upon mutual support and encouragement.

Stevenage 5k Series - Race 2 - 26/11/09
From Icarus to Phoenix - all part of the plan...
After feeling so out of sorts the last few weeks, culminating in the ‘race too far’ at Wing XC, I’d made the decision to take a very easy week, which meant no speed-work and no Stevenage 5k Series Race 2 tonight. Seeing that conditions were much improved from Race 1, I almost toyed with the idea of doing it, but instead gritted my teeth, looked at the big picture and went to watch and cheer on my club-mates.
This was of course the right and sensible thing to do, but watching several of my Squirrel friends run about 30s faster than 2 weeks ago proved quite difficult viewing and left me in a self-pitying what-might-have-been mood. I should own up and admit that I am rather good at that sort of thing! Sincere congratulations to Pete 'born-again' Sibbett for smashing the MV45 5k Club Record - it couldn't have happened to a better man, well almost!
Anyway, enough magnanimity, the plan of course, is to come back refreshed, re-focused, re-educated…re-made. At times like this, you have to turn to the classics to find the right words.
“Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first V-bionic-45 man. Statto will be that man. We can make him better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster."

Three Counties XCL race 2 – Leighton FR (Wing) 22/11/09
Listless at Leighton
I had failed several times of late to complete a training session. I have also felt tired and/or ill during a couple of easy runs. My recent efforts at the Stevenage 5k and St Neot’s HM, whilst producing respectable results, were achieved despite this background and so had taken a lot out of me.
So unsurprisingly, I had a bad feeling about this race. In fact, a race was the last thing I really felt like doing. I went to bed with a sense of foreboding and woke up Sunday morning seriously contemplating giving it a miss. Nonetheless, in the interests of Team NHRR, I found myself at the start line in the rain, feeling cold and unenthusiastic. This was not unlike my mood at the start of the wet and windy Stevenage 5k, but this time things did not improve once the race actually started.
After the lap of the field, it was clear that my legs were not fully co-operating – they felt strangely light and lacking in power. I decided to reduce the effort just to get around. I did try to up the effort several times during the race, but in a manner depressingly reminiscent of Bearbrook 10k in August, my body was just not interested in changing gear. My average HR for the race in fact equated to my normal half-marathon effort. It’s worrying that that is all I could muster for a XC race of less than 5 miles.
A crestfallen Statto ponders where it all went wrong with the help of his new coach >>>>
My finishing position was 33rd, a depressing fall from 17th in the first race. Fortunately, the team overall performed well, with another Overall 3rd place (men 3rd, Women 4th). That leaves us 3rd overall after 2 of the 6 races.

LFR (Wing) XCL - 22/11/09 - Preview
Stevenage 5k (12/11) - St Neots HM (15/11)
Stevenage 5k - foul and windy weather. Pleased with near-PB time of 17:37 given conditions. Part of winning Male Open Herts County Champs team.
St Neot's HM - possibly set off a bit too fast, but still a PB in 01:21:00. Quite breezy in parts. 14th out of 901 finishers

St Neot's HM Preview - 15/11/09
22 Squirrels are lined up to tackle this popular race. As usual, the race filled up well before race-day and last minute transfers have been at a premium! I've entered the last two years, but have had to pull out at the last minute for personal reasons. This year will mark my first ever attempt at this course. By reputation, it's a fast course and whilst not without a few undulations, it's famous for the last 3 miles being downhill back into the town.
Good luck everyone and I hope you have a good race.

Stevenage 5k Series – Preview
The first race of this year’s series takes place on Thu 12th November at 7:45pm (inc Herts Snr Champs). The next two are on Thu 26/11 (inc Herts Vet Champs) and Thu 10/12.
Click here for on-line entries (5 places or less available in all 3 races as of 11/11)
You don’t get many genuine 5k road races, in fact I can only think of 3 spanning between central London and Peterborough (Serpentine, Ferry Meadows Peterborough and Stevenage) The weekly Bushy Park 5k is too ‘off-road’ to qualify as a road race. The Marston Forest 5k in Beds falls into a similar category, as well as not having an SEAA measurement certificate.
All this goes some way to explaining the popularity of the Stevenage series. I think the old course (up to 2007) was a bit flatter and faster. I would say that the new course (2008>) adds around 10s (depending on pace) compared with the old route.
The new route, like the old, is entirely on traffic-free cycle-ways. If the new route has one advantage, it’s that there are fewer tight turns. The key disadvantage of the new route is that the final 1.5k (30% of race) is uphill.
The graph below compares the elevation profiles of both old and new routes. The upper (blue) line is the new route. New route = average gain/loss per mile = 12.07 metres. Old route scores 9.62.

3-counties XCL – Stopsley – 25/10/09
A new XC season and a new course. There are now 13 Clubs in the League and there were 390 finishers – 50 of whom donned the NHRR vest.
I liked the course, which undulates around the Chiltern ridge on the outskirts of Luton. Some thought it was not challenging enough. Perhaps there was too little in the way of water-filled pot-holes, thick grassy tussocks or shin-deep mud? No doubt all these requirements will be met as the XC season progresses!
For me, this easy/hard course assessment is somewhat immaterial. A maximum effort in a road race (or firm underfoot XC) should leave you feeling no less tired than a maximum effort in a muddy XC. A maximum effort is a maximum effort – it’s just the average pace that will vary.
The weather was sunny, but a strong headwind for most of the second half of the race was challenging, especially during the long steady climb between miles 3 and 4. The very steep descent near the start was very entertaining and one runner shouted out “welcome to XC”!
The Club performed well, despite missing one or two faster runners and some runners still coming back to form from injury. We finished 2nd overall on the day (ladies 2nd, men 3rd). The ladies only missed out on 1st place by 1 point and overall the top-3 are very close. This bodes well for the rest of the season. If we get a good turnout at all the races we have a good chance of breaking into the top-two for the first time in a few years.

Personally, I was very pleased with my placing of 17th out of 390, which is by far my best ever XCL performance.

Stopsley XC Preview

So here we are at the start of another XC season - my 3rd with NHRR - and I think I have progressed from active dislike through neutrality to something almost approaching non-negative anticipation!
Conditions underfoot are likely to be firm and there do not appear to be any really nasty climbs. Bad news for bog-sloggers, but good news for those who normally favour bitumen and concrete!

NHRR Annual Ball and Awards Night – 10th Oct 2009
I was away meeting up with a close friend who was over from New Zealand, so was unable to make it to the Ball this year. This was a shame, as this Club has come to mean a great deal to me and this event is a celebration of what it means to belong.
I have worked extremely hard over the last year at my running, often despite (or perhaps because) of pressures in my personal life. In this context, to receive 3 Club Awards was a wonderful way to be recognised for my efforts.
* Most Improved Male Runner
* Short Course Male Champion
* Best Male Runner
To see my name next to some of the illustrious previous winners is a genuine thrill and somewhat humbling... Sir Darth Frampton, Reginald Lord Sibbo III, Speed McKeown, Paul Pearce...
Thanks NHRR for providing me with the opportunity to discover a passion for running. I hope many more years of enjoyment still lie ahead.

Club Records - a personal viewpoint...
It was suggested to me recently that we should include previous Club Record holders against each distance/age-cat, as well as the current holder. It could be perceived as unfair when a long-standing record is broken, especially if you are now too old to go back and re-claim it, or if faster runners have now entered your age category.
Whilst I am not entirely unsympathetic to this point of view, I see things quite simply. The Club Record is the Club Record - there is only one holder. They are there motivate and inspire us to break them.
12-month Rolling Rankings – a clarification
I have had some feedback recently as to why I only list the top 6 in my Rolling Rankings for 5M and Marathon (until recently was only top-5), whereas the others show the top 10. The reason for this is that far fewer people race these distances. I can illustrate the logic with the following examples for men.
The top-10 list for 10k represents 18% of all men who have done at least 1x 10k. If I listed the top-10 Marathoners, that would represent 50% of all men who had done at least 1x Marathon. The top 6 still equates to 30%, which still compares very favourably with having to be in the top 18% of 10k runners to make the list.
Thus, to qualify for the top-10 (top 6 for 5M or Marathon) you currently need to be in the top
36% for 5k
35% for 5M
18% for 10k
29% for 10M
25% for HM
30% for Marathon
I hope this reassures marathoners that I am fair-minded!

NHRR's very own "Standalone 10k" - 4th October 2009
A return to form for Statto...and NHRR pick up lots of prizes...
With a time in today’s race of 36:16 (only 8s outside PB), I am now back in the zone I occupied in May-July this year and can hopefully now push on to further improvements over the coming months. After several very disappointing races during the summer, this was a real confidence booster. Taking two very easy weeks at the end of August, followed by 5 weeks of solid training and minimal racing (by my standards – ha ha) seems to have done the trick.
As a bonus today, I also picked up the 3rd MV40 prize. To my 5-year-old son, I described this as prize for fast daddies!
I was over 2m faster than last year, but to indicate the strength of the NHRR male team, I failed to be in the top-4 NHRR finishers this time! However, my overall finishing position was 13th out of 1008 runners. That’s in the top 1.3%, and by that measure, my best ever race position.
The race organisation was spot-on as always, which takes many months of planning and many hours of graft over race week-end by NHRR members and their friends/family. There can’t be many better 10k races around than this one.
Full NHRR results are below. NHRR also scooped both the Male and Female team prizes.
