Another good week’s work, but I’m really ready for that taper now…
So, after 12 weeks of hard work, including 6 runs of around 20 miles or more, it’s time to start easing down for the big day. This will mean gradually reducing my mileage (but not the mix of training speeds) over the next three weeks from a 60 mile/week peak. The peak was originally planned to be 70 mpw, but having to cut back a couple of times due to tiredness or illness made this impossible. However, I have completed around 60 miles or more for 4 of the last 12 weeks, so not too bad really.
My final very long run was completed today (hoorah). As last week, this went well, and the spring-like windless weather certainly helped. Distance completed was 21.4 miles in just over 2hr 30min (7:09/mile average). Having Ollie “Shakin” Saville for company also helped the miles to pass a bit faster. I’m sure all the dog-walkers were dazzled by this Oakley-eyed pair!
The week’s 10k session also went well, especially in the context of coming only 48 hrs after last Sunday’s near 23 mile effort. I also managed to squeeze in 8 miles at marathon HR effort during a 10 mile run on Wed. This worked out at an average pace of 6:30/mile, which I was pretty happy with, given I was feeling very tired after the previous evening’s hilly 10k-pace workout.
When I entered the marathon on 1st January, it seemed so far away, but the prospect certainly feels very real now!
