The weather seemed to be a dominant factor in week 1 of my 3-week taper, specifically the wind. Tue saw my final full 10k session before M-day and it was a tad breezy in parts. It continued to be breezy in several other runs, including a short (6-mile) marathon paced effort on Thu.
The strongest winds however awaited me in my 10k tune-up race on Sunday near Norwich - the Coltishall 10k. This was a fairly flat 2-lap course on quiet country lanes, but half of each lap was run into a very strong wind which put paid to any hopes of a PB. In truth, I almost packed it in after one lap and if you look at my HR profile to the right (click to enlarge) you will see the dip where I eased off in anticipation of throwing in the towel!
I guess 36:39 wasn't too bad in the circumstances, as was an overall 8th place and my first ever 1st MV40-49 prize over any race type or distance. It's been a tough 13 weeks so far, and whilst I'm enjoying the opportunity to ease up into the big day, I'm also increasingly impatient for the big day to arrive. I'm fed fed up with just thinking, talking and reading about the marathon!
Lucky you put "the" in your subtitle! It was horribly windy last week & unbelievably seems like more of the same this week. Why don't you read some novels/watch some films/play with the kids & generally enjoy not having churn out the miles during your taper? It's the best period as you suddenly have a much more time to generally lark about.
