Mulligatawny Run and Picnic at Lilley

This run follows the 7.3M route of a tough winter XC race organised by NHRR some years ago. All race-finishers were awarded a tin of Mulligatwany soup, hence the name! There are several steep inclines, but these are offset by some lovely views from the Chiltern ridge above Pegsdon. There are also a couple of pleasant wooded sections.

Over 20 Squirrels turned out for this recreational jaunt, by way of a break from the recent intensive spell of training and racing. The run was rounded off with a picnic. Thanks to everyone who brought food, but a special mention to Tash who provided Magnum ice-lollies! You can check out the route on MapMyRun

MWL Race 4 (St Albans) - Preview

So here we are at the final race in this year’s MWL. It’s been a great team effort to-date, so hopefully we can cap the series with another great showing and post our best ever MWL series performance. Come on you Squirrels!

After Chingford, we now add an extra 0.3 miles to make the pleasantly rural, but hilly 7M St Albans course. It’s not as challenging in the hill-stakes as Chingford, but you do get more undulations for your money. Anyone who’s done the St Albans half-marathon will recognise much of the route.

The start is on a very narrow public footpath adjacent to a busy road, so expect some jostling for the first 7-800m until you get on the country lane.

You can also see the route on MapMyRun.

MWL Race 3 – Orion Harriers (Chingford) - 17/06/09

Team standings after race 3 of 4

What a lovely place Epping Forest is to run in on a summer evening. Of course, it would be even more enjoyable at recovery pace! Then, there is the ‘small’ matter of THAT hill up to the 4.5 mile point…

First of all, to team matters. We had another fantastic turnout from NHRR runners and supporters which was rewarded by another 3rd place on the night. This consolidated our overall cumulative 3rd place after 3 races and also extended our lead over 4th-placed FVS from 5 to 10 points.

The Orion course is scenic, but tough! Ranks 3rd in my hill-factor list of 71 road-races.

I set off quite conservatively, yet found myself well up the field after the first mile. In fact, I felt very comfortable for the first 3 miles, despite continuing to move up the field. The only point I felt rough was coming up the big hill in mile 5, but that was the same for everyone I’m sure! In not overdoing it in that section, I had enough left in the tank push on in the final 2 miles and hold off several challengers. Well, that is, with the exception of our own Steve McKeown, who sneaked up unnoticed and pipped me right on the line just as I was feeling good about out-sprinting a St Albans runner. Steve, it was an honour! Perhaps it was comeuppance for doing the same to Mark Robertson in the first race, when 19th and 20th places were also exchanged at the last between two Squirrels?

I was happy with my performance and for again being in the top 5 V40s. That makes a consistent performance across the 3 races to-date, with finishing positions of 19th, 23rd and 20th.

Hopefully we’ll finish off the series in St Albans with another bumper turnout and perhaps achieve our best ever MWL season.

Springfield Striders Friday 5 - 12/06/09

Like running at altitude, running in Essex requires some practice. So to prepare for our trip to Chingford next week, I ran in the Springfield Striders Friday 5Mile (nr Chelmsford) on Friday 12th June. I did this race last year too and set my first ever NHRR Club Record on it. It’s certainly not the fastest course (although on pleasantly quiet rural lanes), but I had happy memories of it, so thought… what the hell, I’m feeling a bit tired, so let’s do another race! There were a few Spartans there too, so perhaps they also felt the need to get the feel of Essex? Either that or they also like having the finishing line right outside the Howe Street village pub?!

Another reason for doing a 5-miler now was that Cranfield 5 falls the day after the St Albans MWL race this year, so I thought I'd try and bank a good 5M time whilst I was in good form.

Approaching the finish >>>

Things didn't look so rosy Friday morning however. I had quite bad sciatica centred about my left ‘cheek’ which made it uncomfortable to bend down and shot occasional pains down my left leg. The last time I had sciatica was in 2004 after a spell of kamikaze treadmill workouts. That stopped me running for 3 months and it was 2 years before I put back on a pair of running shoes. After a hot bath and a few spells with the hot water bottle, things seemed to calm down a bit, so (sensibly?) I thought I’d travel to Essex and see how I felt after the warm-up.

The warm-up went OK. There was no pain, but I didn’t feel as loose as I’d have liked. About 2 of the first 3 miles is up-hill and by the end of that section I knew my target-time of 28:45 (a reasonable projection from my Welwyn MWL 10k time) was not going to happen. Perhaps it was the heat, but my legs were just not feeling up to the challenge. The final mile is mostly downhill, but I didn’t quite have the oomph left to make the most of it this year. Ultimately my overall mile-pace was actually slower than that in my 10k PB last week. It’s fair to say that you can’t be ‘up’ for a max effort every week, so hopefully I will be back on best form for Chingford.

Anyway, despite all this carping, my time was 29:07 (12th place – 1st MV45) - about 20s slower than I was hoping for, but 14s faster than my previous PB and MV45 Club Record. Statto is very stern task-master!

Orion MWL Race 3 (Chingford) Preview

Preparing the preview for this race has taken a bit of detective work!

The info we have from Orion says that the course is the same as 2008 (6.7 miles). I managed to find someone’s Garmin data for last year, but this indicated about 5.7 miles. The answer to this conundrum was that the Garmin data was somewhat corrupt and did not accurately trace the route. 6.7 miles looks like the correct answer after all.

I have attached what I believe to be the correct route and elevation profile. Looks like a couple of stiff climbs included! You can find the race info issued by Orion Harriers here.

Mideweek League Race 2 - Welwyn 10k - 04/6/09

I’d had a strange week leading up to this race

* Thursday training – split-times OK, but felt like really hard work
* Friday recovery run - felt really ropey.
* Saturday - 12M long run ended up as only 9M and had to keep stopping
* Saturday (later) – partying in Nottingham – kebab and chips @ 3:30am!
* Sunday – recovery day in more ways than one
* Monday – easy run – not great, but feeling better than Fri/Sat at least
* Tue – easy off-road run with NHRR – still heavy-legged - bad hayfever attack
* Wed – no running - total rest day
* Thu (race day) – had to take a mid afternoon nap!

A nice relaxed start (photo by Martyn Annetts)

I really had no idea how I was going to perform. I was hoping the rest would finally kick in, my legs would stop feeling like jelly, and I’d have a reasonable race. The only encouraging indicator was that my resting heart rate was 39 on Wed night having been in the mid to high 40s for few days. One thing I did know for sure however was that I would be making a conservative start and be running to a target HR range.

The start was very crowded and, even quite near the front, it was very congested for the first km on the narrow, twisty pavements. This may have helped reign in my speed. At the 5k mark I was on target for around 36m and still feeling strong (in stark contrast to the Stevenage MWL 10k). In the second half of the race I think I made up about 10 places.

At about 8k - one of many NHRR vs FVS encounters (photo by Martyn Annetts) >>

I have mentioned before that the average pace on the Garmin can be 2-3s out either way. This was one of those occasions when the read-out was flattering, as it indicated a mile pace of 5:46, but was actually 5:49. This meant that my time was 36:08 rather than sub-36m, but still a PB. After the way I’d been feeling the previous week, I have to be pretty happy with that. This course is also harder than where previous PB (36:10) was set a month ago.

Another great team effort from NHRR (runners and supporters) and we came a very creditable 3rd overall and consolidated our 3rd position overall in the race-series to-date. Importantly, we increased our lead over nearest rivals FVS and have a 7 point cushion over relegation!

Things learnt/reminded of this week

* Rest and proper sleep are VERY important!!
* Racing (as well as training) within target HR ranges works very well for me.
* Run your own race and do not be distracted by what other runners are up to.
